The Uniform Hospital Discharge Dataset (UHDDS) definition for principal diagnosis is \u201cthe condition established after study to be chiefly responsible for occasioning the admission of the patient to the hospital for care\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For ED datasets:<\/strong> This field is often referred to as the \u201cfirst-listed diagnosis\u201d rather than the \u201cprincipal diagnosis\u201d, and the code found there does not have the same significance.
